Downtown Merced Project Spotlight

The Tioga Hotel
The Tioga Hotel, a historic gem in the heart of Merced, CA, was originally built in 1928 and proudly featured Merced's first neon sign. In 2018, the Tioga underwent a $15 million renovation under new management, transforming the building into a luxury mixed-use apartment complex while preserving its original architectural charm.

Applied Media was entrusted with recreating the historic marquee sign that once crowned the iconic hotel. Using modern faux neon technology, our skilled team worked closely with the developer and city officials to design, permit, and install the largest rooftop display in Merced. The new sign stands as a true landmark, honoring the city’s history while showcasing modern craftsmanship.

El Capitan Hotel
Just one block south of the Tioga Hotel is the historic El Capitan Hotel, originally built in 1872 and rebuilt in 1912 at the corner of "M" and Main Streets in downtown Merced. Under new management, the hotel underwent a significant renovation, and Applied Media was honored to play a pivotal role in the restoration.

For the exterior, we designed and installed a striking 40-foot blade sign visible for miles, even from Highway 99. We also retrofitted the hotel’s historic neon sign, restoring its vibrant glow and original charm. The exterior signage is a standout feature, bringing new life to downtown Merced. Inside, we collaborated with the development team to produce and install custom wooden ADA and wayfinding signage, adding a warm, rustic aesthetic that perfectly complements the hotel’s restored character.

Mainzer Theater
Nestled between the Tioga Hotel and El Capitan Hotel lies the art deco-inspired Mainzer Theater. Originally opened in 1920 as a venue for live opera performances, the theater was revitalized as part of the renovations of its neighboring landmarks.

Applied Media was thrilled to contribute to this iconic restoration, designing and installing signage that perfectly matches the theater's swanky, art deco style. The result is nothing short of spectacular and seamlessly ties into Merced’s vibrant downtown scene.
